Large 54 H bird sculpture, awesome folk art hand carved with a Crow or Raven with a beautifully animated expression and perched on a stand. Fits in any decor, rustic, primitive… Even mid century or whatever. And I do not know it’s place of origin. Made from a medium colored, very hard wood that allows for such intricate carving but not a heavy wood such as oak as more mid weight. Totally and masterfully hand carved with superb detail as shown. Well done as an art work by someone who must have had a love for birds/ crows as this is definitely from the Corvus genus and the passion of the artist is evident throughout. The coloration that looks “verdigris” is actually what remains of the original paint applied to the bird and stand. In images, paint may look whitish but is actually a mellow turquoise blue. After acquiring this wonderful piece from an estate, I used a very bright light and magnifying glass to look the bird completely over, I have found old styled black paint on and in the beak and blue paint left in the feathers here and there. Some can be better seen to the very back tail feathers (see images) Someone removed most of the paint, perhaps to save the piece and restore it… Or perhaps to let the beautifully dark stained wood and the wood details be seen again. Whoever did this was very careful not to hurt the piece. Why this sculpture was made is also hard to say… Perhaps a personal decorative patio or yard piece or perhaps a prop used for a personal business… I think this was not made as a commercial piece but more on a personal level… The styling has an older antique / Victorian look but it also has an Asian influence to it as well. My research has found nothing like it anywhere. ANY bird person would love this in their collection and to that end, I hope it becomes an exceptional treasure for someone to have and to hold and perhaps one day be a family heirloom. The Crow / Raven itself measures 30 from beak tip to tail tip. Height of bird from feet to top tail feather appx 27″ and is 7″ side to side. Head of the Bird is 6.5″ L and 3″ side to side. Thick beak and jowls. Wings are 10.25″ L, 9″ Legs and tail appx 13″ L x 7″ W. Log perch is 12″ W with 3.5″ diameter. Overall height is 54 when the top piece is placed on the upright stand. Condition is very good, especially for its size and age. There was a age related crack right where the tail comes out behind the wings that seemingly went around and not through (aging and dryness) and does not appear that the tail has ever broken off from the body as still perfectly aligned and, thankfully, it has been very well repaired (would guess by the original artist / wood worker as so well done or another very good crafter) Found it only by using a strong portable direct light when examining once I had this piece home. There is not any play or wobbling to the tail, is solid as can be and not easily detected, still have to let you know to stay transparent. (SEE IMAGES) There is also one thin side edge piece missing from one feather to the tail (seen to left when viewing the tail/ bird). That will be left as is, as so minor overall and adds to its uniqueness and age.. Small wood piece/ chip missing from one foot that appears age / wear related to the end of very bottom cross structure. There is a small old short split to the bottom platform… From aging, rather like the look and helps to verify some age… This piece has all the signs as authentic… And will guaranteed it is as presented. There is a age related natural superficial crack above one leg where it meets the body… Adds to it and does not detract.. And if you look at the round platform collar of the pillar stand, you can see more natural cracking… Solid, no wobble, not loose at all… And of course general age related wear all over… Really, very nice condition for such a unique and astounding piece. All the wear, part of its story and travels. This Bird is ready to start journeying with you! Smooth to the touch and solid. Made in two large pieces. The sculpture is designed as a floor / ground piece and as the actual weight is lighter, it can be moved gently wherever you want it to sit. And it sits well. The Perch log and the bird are each made from one piece of wood and the two pieces fit together by a hole carved into the bottom of the bird’s cross perch onto a corresponding wood peg atop the separate upright pedestal log stand that has an X footed wood designed base. The base pedestal again is from one piece of wood identical to the bird section, but the crossed bottom footings are separately made and attached. Overall, all parts of this carving show aged and use wear, including the hole and peg area where this piece fits together. Three of the feet are perfect and one has a small end corner slightly damaged as seen… Part of its history. The column is attached to the feet, not sure if artist used wood peg or nail as he or she covered with some old material to cover them to blend in. Also want to mention the hole under the bird for connecting was made with an vintage/ antique manual drill wood workers used back in the day. No signs of any tool electric found here! Guaranteed as shown and described… Will be using Fed Ex or UPS depending on the destination. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Animals\Birds\Other Bird Collectibles”.
